Digitally altered. There’s a nice way to sanitize it. Why not just call a spade a spade and say the model, Filippa Hamilton, was disfigured by the Photoshop magic?

The words slashed and sliced come to mind, too. When I saw her image on the Internet last week, my first thought was: Eeuww. ET go home. To me, she looked like an alien beamed down from the Planet Zog. Either that or a circus freak. She certainly didn’t look human. For heaven’s sake, the woman’s skull is bigger than her pelvis.

My second thought was: "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case." This image is proof that the fashion industry really does want to turn women into in an army of Toothpick People.

I mean, what are models anyway, if not role female models for women, beauty and fashion? If these models are inhumanly thin, then what exactly is the message to women (and girls) at whom these images are pitched?

My third thought was this: good. No really. This absurd image is the best thing to hit the fashion industry in a long time. In years to come, Photoshopgate will be viewed as the moment when the harsh white light was shone on the lie and truth of this industry.

The lie is that these uber-thin women are even possible. They are not. Filippa’s image is a visual lie perpetrated by the fashion industry, which used Photoshop to do its fibbing.

Even scarier is the truth. And that is that Filippa’s distorted image really does represent the apex of female beauty tips as far as the fashion industry is concerned.

When it’s not possible for female models to achieve this ideal through starving and purging, the industry simply doctors up the images to create the emaciated waif they want to display their fashions.

The response from Ralph Lauren was telling. The clothing line apologized, not for the sickly thinness of the model in the image, but for the poor Photoshopping.

In other words, it said sorry because the lie wasn’t good enough. Now there’s a truth for you.

It’s time to unravel this ridiculous notion that emaciation is chic, that Size 00 is meaningful and that it’s fashionable to look like a malnourished heroin addict or famine victim.

Fashion models are freakishly thin. They starve, they purge, they even die in pursuit of the insatiable demand for thinness.

This Photoshopped image is an embarrassment, not just to the designer Ralph Lauren, but to an entire industry that’s been pummelled with this criticism for years.

And rather than make real changes, the industry’s swatted these criticisms blithely aside as though critics are just a bunch of embittered fatties funnelling petty jealousies into mean-spirited comments about thin models.

Meanwhile, the fashion models keep getting thinner and thinner until we end up with Filippa’s image.

Who knows if Photoshopgate will herald a new trend in fashion? Perhaps we’ll have Retro-Rubenesque or the New Voluptuous or even Neo-Marilyn curves.

Perhaps not.

But something’s got to give because if this thing continues on its present path, one of these days a runway model will turn sideways and disappear into thin air.

Paul Weitz is directing the third installment in the successful Universal and Tribeca Productions franchise. Production is set to begin in the next few months, with a 2010 release date likely.

The picture is expected to pick up where 2004’s Meet The Fockers left off, with Stiller’s Gaylord Focker and Teri Polo’s Pamela Byrnes becoming parents. John Hamburg, one of the screenwriters on the earlier film, wrote the latest version of the script.

She explained in an interview with Vanity Fair actress magazine: "I’ve always been a worrier."

She said: "It was my first acting school. I would pretend to be doing my homework, but Penelope Cruz was really observing the women.

"I found their behaviour mesmerising— what they were hiding, how they left feeling a little different after they’d been helped to become a little more like whom they wanted to look like.

"They treated the place a little bit like a psychologist’s office. They would share all their secrets.

London Fashion Week has just drawn to a close, and what a week it’s been. This year saw LFW celebrate its 25thanniversary, and it did so with a bang, bringing in top designers and A-list fashionistas, the likes of which have not been seen in the front row in London for far too many years.

For some inexplicable reason, London Fashion week has recently been eclipsed by its counterparts in New York, Paris and Milan; those fashion capitals showcased big designers whilst London focused on presenting raw, young model talent. London has by no means forgotten its roots, playing host to the hot young things in their Fashion East and New Generation shows, but this year the big boys came out to play too.

It’s hard to decide who were the real stars of this year’s LFW: was it the top designers showing their stuff on the catwalk, or the renowned fashion editors and style-savvy celebrities perched in the front row? The answer is both, and let’s remember that one would probably not exist without the other – it is doubtful whether French Vogue’s Carine Roitfeld or the infamous Anna Wintour would have deigned to make appearances had LFW not stepped up its fashion model credentials.

This year was all about Wintour, spurred by the fact that she has recently become a global superstar actress thanks to the American Vogue frockumentary The September Issue. Her presence in the front row of numerous shows and her sharp eye for talent (albeit hidden behind sunglasses) added the final gold star to an already stellar week.

Alongside Wintour’s welcome presence, LFW’s main fashion boost came in the form of Burberry’s return to the London catwalk. This most eagerly awaited show was switched from Milan to London to help celebrate 25 years of fashion in Britain, and everyone was certainly glad it did.

The fashion gliteratti were out in force to celebrate its return, with the front row boasting the likes of Burberry model and actress Emma Watson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mario Testino and Victoria Beckham. Other designer highlights included Luella’s girly mini-dresses, Erdem Moralioglu’s abstract-floral frocks, clashing colours galore and the unveiling of the new silhouette of the season – sharp shoulders, nipped-in waist and diamond-shaped skirt, as shown at Peter Pilotto and Antonio Berardi.

So, to wrap it all up, here are five things that this week taught us:

1. It’s all in the hair, and bigger is most definitely better. Get ready for some very bizarre hair concoctions over the next few months.

2. Big shoulders are still, er, big.

3. Double denim is still a heinous fashion crime, even if Sienna Miller’s Twenty8Twelve collection begged to differ.

4. Soft ice-cream shades, as showcased at Christopher Kane, are all the rage.

5. Yes, it really does matter who is sitting in the front row. And she better be wearing shades.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell, who will turn 40 later this year, made a successful return to the catwalk, showing off her enviable figure in beauty colourful swim suits.

There are very few designers with the time — or the inclination — to sit among an admittedly tiny audience of critics and describe each outfit as it comes down the catwalk. But more than any other designer, Victoria Beckham is the personification of her brand. “Never wear the same outfit as a model, especially when you feel crappy, I’ve been up all night,” she said chirpily, as everyone took their seats.

Despite her entrepreneurial and worldwide fame, Heidi Klum “couldn’t book a job” when she started fashions modeling.

The 36-year-old star expected it to be easy to launch her career after winning a $300,000 modelling contract on the 1992 television show Model 92, but initially found it hard to find work.

“After winning I thought, ‘This is my ticket. Things will happen.’ But they didn’t—I could never book a job. I was walking around New York for three or four years,” she explained.

Heidi, who raises three children with husband Seal and is currently pregnant with her fourth, says everything changed for her when she was spotted at a Victoria’s beauty Secret show.

She now regularly makes it onto the Forbes list of highest earning fashions models, raking in $16 million to take the second place in the latest edition.

The fashion industry’s national organisation inked an ethical charter two years ago aimed at protecting the health of models.

Praise was heaped upon the industry for attempting to steer away from the undernourished, skinny ideal that has long been the branch’s maligned trademark.

But a new study conducted by the national society against eating disorders and self-mutilation (LMS) shows the industry has largely ignored the document’s contents. LMS had hoped the Danish Fashion Institute’s initial co-operation in drafting and signing the charter would make a dent in the physically and psychologically damaging trend.

‘We’ve been forced to acknowledge that the fashion beauty industry hasn’t learned much in the past two years,’ LMS president Anne Minor Christensen told Berlingske Tidende newspaper.

Despite the fashion institute taking part in drafting the charter, there was still strong resistance within the industry to follow the guidelines, said Christensen.

As a result of its findings, LMS was now proposing that all model undergo a complete annual physical examination. In addition, all digitally manipulated photographs should be clearly marked as such.

Christensen said LMS wanted ethical council created with representatives from interest organisations, politicians and the fashion industry itself, to work on changing society’s attitudes toward body shape ideals.

Designer Antonie Lauritzen, who was once herself a model, believed the industry was having to carry the lion’s share of responsibility for promoting the too-skinny ideal.

‘The fashion industry has always had the power to manipulate the masses and determine the ideal body, all the way back to the days of the crinoline,’ Lauritzen said.

‘It’s the designers who decide how we dress and beauty look, so we therefore have to make clothing that fits people the way the are and not ones where they have to live up to a standard.’

The LMS research estimates up to 75,000 people in Denmark – primarily women and girls – suffer from eating disorders.
